Helmes Latvia implemented a centralised SAP solution for Riga Technical University (RTU). The solution brings finance, accounting, human resources, and project management processes into a unified digital environment, supporting the university’s long-term digitalisation strategy.

Executive summary

As part of its ongoing digital transformation, Riga Technical University launched a large-scale initiative to modernise the management of its core business processes. The university sought a solution that would simplify operations, improve organisational transparency, and provide more reliable access to information across the institution.

Helmes Latvia was selected to implement an enterprise-wide SAP environment covering financial management, accounting, human resources, employee lifecycle management, and project financial management.

Delivered in collaboration with Zalaris HR Services Latvia and Solwit, the programme replaced fragmented processes with a unified approach to resource management, helping RTU strengthen operational efficiency, support better decision-making, and prepare for future development

“We are pleased to support RTU by implementing and maintaining not only a technically robust system but also a sustainable solution designed for future growth.”

Riga Technical University

Riga Technical University (RTU) is the oldest technical university in the Baltic States and one of Latvia’s leading higher education and research institutions. For more than 160 years, RTU has played a central role in advancing science, engineering, and innovation in the region.

The university serves more than 13,000 students, including over 4,000 international students from nearly 100 countries. With a strong focus on technology, research, and industry collaboration, RTU continues to invest in modern infrastructure and digital capabilities that support excellence in education, science, and innovation.

The Challenge

Managing finance, people, projects, and administrative operations across a large university requires effective coordination between multiple departments, systems, and stakeholders.

As such, RTU needed a system capable of supporting these departments while also providing greater consistency, visibility, and control across day-to-day operations.

At the same time, the university had set an ambitious strategic goal: to strengthen its position among leading universities in the fields of IT and digitalisation.

Achieving this required a technology foundation capable of supporting both current needs and future operational requirements.

In addition, the university wanted to adopt a solution already used by leading universities worldwide, aligning RTU with globally recognised technology standards.

Solution & Delivery

Helmes Latvia delivered a SAP programme in stages, allowing RTU to introduce new capabilities in a structured and manageable way. Alongside this, the project included system integration, data migration, and user training to support adoption across the university and ensure the solution is embedded into day-to-day operations.

Bringing core functions together within a single platform enabled information to move more easily across the organisation, reduced administrative overhead, and provided a more consistent approach to managing university operations.

The project forms part of a broader higher education modernisation programme supported by the European Union Recovery Fund, aimed at strengthening excellence in higher education, science, and innovation.
